John F. Newton was the general claim agent for the Northern Pacific Railway Company in Saint Paul, Minnesota. He retired on December 19, 1908. Included are his memorandum calendars for the years of 1894, 1896, 1898-1906, and 1908. The information consists mostly of appointments regarding claims cases, travel destinations, weather conditions, family affairs, and some mention of current events including brief information on the service of J. E. Newton in the Spanish-American War with the 13th Minnesota Regiment, Company B.
